This simulated Uranium Mining Museum is top notch! Retrace the experience of going underground and see what the Miners worked in everyday. Learn about the rich historical legacy of mining and the related culture of Grants/Cibola County. The initial boom in the Grants area started soon after Paddy Martinez, a Navajo sheepherder, found uranium-bearing outcrops in the Todilto Limestone Member of the Wanakah Formation at the foot of Haystack Butte in the spring of 1950.

The National Park Service currently runs the El Malpais National Monument Visitor Center. They are open from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm every day of the week except for Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ranger station on Highway 117 is now the main information station for the El Malpais Conservation Area. They can be reached at 505-280-2918.

This museum, created by Cibola County Historical Society, features a restored 51 ft. beacon tower and power shed from the 1929 Mid-Continental Airway. The adjacent 1953 Flight Service Station gave 24-hour weather and route data to pilots along this airway; it has varied exhibits on local and regional aviation and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum rich in cultural architecture, serves as the reception center and museum for visitors to the Pueblo of Acoma. It is the gateway to Acoma “Sky City”. Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico is more than just a tourist destination. Its part of New Mexico’s cultural heritage, as the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America and the 28th Historic Site designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Acoma history is also the story of the Southwest, from its initial role as the home to the Anasazi people, to the thirteenth century founding of the Pueblo, which is still alive and well as a community and touchstone for Native Americans in the area and nationwide.

This Route 66 Museum, located in the Double Six Gallery on this historic highway in Grants, features a collection of historic postcards that showcase New Mexico’s unique section of this historic thoroughfare. They have taken these postcards, had them scanned, enlarged and presented as you would encounter them during a drive along Route 66 between Continental Divide and Mesita. This museum is a great record of Route 66 in New Mexico and how it affected the local economic development.

In 2018, the Cibola Arts Council, in conjunction with Sacred Wind Communications’ Connect 66 Internet, the City of Grants, and the Grants/Cibola County Chamber of Commerce, unveiled their Native Basket Array, a series of satellite dishes donated by Connect 66 Internet, painted by New Mexico artists to resemble traditional Native basket designs. The attraction is located in Grants, NM, along Historic Route 66, and offers an insight into local traditions and art styles, as well as offers an avenue for self-guided tours along the Mother Road. The stunning art which is enlarged and wrapped around the satellite dishes is on full display and reflects beautifully in the New Mexico sun. An original Native American basket, represented by one of the dishes is even on full display in the New Mexico Mining Museum.
